Construction Begins on Northside Hospital’s Emergency Department Expansion

Construction is officially underway on the Northside Hospital Emergency Department Expansion, marking a major step forward in strengthening emergency care capacity in one of Atlanta’s busiest medical corridors.

This multi-phase project is designed with a clear priority: expand and modernize critical healthcare infrastructure without interrupting the lifesaving services already in motion.

Building Around a Fully Operational Emergency Department

Expanding an emergency department isn’t like building on a blank site. Every decision has to account for ongoing operations — ambulances arriving, patients moving through triage, staff navigating tight timelines, and systems that can’t afford downtime.

The project will deliver more than 67,000 square feet of new space, along with targeted renovations to the existing facility. Once complete, the expansion will improve:

  • Patient access and flow
  • Emergency response efficiency
  • Ambulance circulation and staging
  • On-site parking through a new structured deck

But the real complexity lies in how all of this gets built, not just what gets built.

Solving for Complexity Behind the Scenes

Hussey Gay Bell supported the project with surveying and civil engineering services, helping lay the groundwork for a seamless construction process in a highly constrained environment.

That meant tackling challenges like:

Dual drainage systems
Working within an existing hospital campus often means interfacing with legacy infrastructure. Designing around and integrating a dual drainage system required careful analysis and coordination to avoid disruptions and ensure long-term performance.

Phased construction planning
Keeping the emergency department fully operational required detailed phasing strategies. Every stage of construction had to be sequenced to maintain access, safety, and functionality.

Utility coordination and permitting
Hospitals rely on complex utility networks—power, water, medical gas, communications. Coordinating these systems while advancing construction demanded close collaboration across disciplines and with local agencies to keep approvals moving.

None of this work is highly visible once construction begins, but it’s exactly what allows the visible progress to happen without friction.

Supporting a Critical Investment in Atlanta’s Healthcare Future

Healthcare systems across the country are expanding to meet growing demand, aging populations, and increased pressure on emergency services. Projects like this one represent more than square footage, they’re investments in community resilience.

For Atlanta, the Northside Hospital Emergency Department Expansion will help ensure that patients receive faster, more efficient care in moments when it matters most.

Moving Forward

As construction progresses, the success of this project will depend on continued coordination, precision, and adaptability across the entire team.

We’re proud to contribute to an effort that strengthens essential infrastructure while keeping care uninterrupted—and to support a project that will have a lasting impact on patient experience in Atlanta.
