Boeing acquired Vought Aircraft/Global Aeronautica in 2008 and announced plans for a new Boeing 787 manufacturing facility adjacent to the Charleston International Airport in 2009. The firm was retained to perform site/civil design, surveying and permitting, landscape and boardwalk design, boundary and topographic surveys to ALTA surveys for property acquisitions, traffic impact studies, and water systems planning and design services to the design-build team of BE&K/Turner Joint Venture in association with BRPH. Hussey Gay Bell’s scope of work is outlined:
2005: Overall site and utility design for the $75M, 450,000+ SF Vought Aircraft/Global Aeronautica aircraft manufacturing facility. Included early site construction plans and accelerated permitting to allow critical phases of site preparation work to begin prior to final design.
2009-11: On-call surveying services and earthwork monitoring were provided at the project’s onset to verify the earthwork quantities on over two million cubic yards of dirt to within the contractually required 5% margin of error.
2010-11: Water system master planning was provided with portions of the existing site comprised of numerous Charleston Water System-owned master meters and water mains. Scope of work included design of a 16-inch water transmission main encompassing the site. Approx. 7,300 LF of ductile iron pipeline with valves and hydrants were required along with 232 LF of 30-in steel casing installed by jack and bore under taxiway.
2010-11: Provided road design and intersection improvements including the design of the relocation of one mile of South Aviation Avenue and pedestrian improvements to the access routes to the Boeing Assembly Facility.
2010-11: Site-wide landscape design included new roadways and intersections, open spaces between buildings and roadways, large stormwater ponds and wetlands areas, a new site-wide network of nature trails and a path system including a boardwalk through wetlands.
2012: Construction phase surveying services were provided including anchor bolt as-built surveys for concrete foundation and footings and steel column layout and verification.
2013: The firm was engaged by the design-build joint venture to provide ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys for Property Acquisition. Approximately 1,295 acres of ALTA/ACSM property surveys were completed.
Final project consisted of a state-of-the-art production facility on a 240-acre campus, including 610,000 SF of production, 375,000 SF of mezzanine support, and a 20,000 SF central utility plant. The final assembly building is 780,000 SF. All phases were completed in 2013 and to date, the firm continues to provide on-call professional services to Boeing.
