BUILDING MOMENTUM IN WATER & WASTEWATER
The water and wastewater industry never stands still and neither does Hussey Gay Bell. With offices continuing to expand and project opportunities growing across the Southeast, leadership in this sector depends on both technical excellence and authentic relationships. Few know that better than Kevin Strickland, Principal and leader of the firm’s Greenville, SC, and Nashville, TN, offices.
FROM COLUMBIA TO GREENVILLE & BEYOND
Kevin began his career with Hussey Gay Bell in the Columbia, SC office, which at the time was focused primarily on transportation projects. That role soon evolved into something bigger where he helped expand the firm’s strengths beyond transportation.
“While my background included a broad range of experience, this presented a great opportunity to diversify and expand the office’s capabilities. Holmes Bell had been planning to make major changes including increasing our presence in water and sewer services, and over time, we built a strong team of talented individuals that helped elevate and strengthen that side of the business.”
Two years ago, Kevin was tapped to establish the Greenville office, which quickly gained traction thanks to a strong team and an intentional approach to growth. Today, his focus also includes supporting the Nashville team, bringing that same energy and commitment to collaboration across state lines.
A SHARED VISION FOR GROWTH
Kevin’s leadership philosophy centers on building something lasting — not just in terms of projects, but in people.
“What excites me most is the opportunity to build and grow something meaningful.”
That passion for mentorship and collaboration is what drives both the Greenville and Nashville offices. Kevin describes seeing his teams thrive and evolve as one of the most fulfilling parts of his role.
“It’s incredibly fulfilling to see people thrive and offices evolve.”
LEADING WITH RELATIONSHIPS
When asked what keeps Hussey Gay Bell competitive in the water and wastewater market, Kevin doesn’t hesitate. In a competitive industry, Hussey Gay Bell’s advantage isn’t just technical expertise — it’s trust. Kevin believes relationships are the foundation of both client satisfaction and long-term success.
“Our strategy is simple: prioritize relationships. While many firms get caught up in technical metrics and internal processes, what sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to quality work and client satisfaction. We’re not just chasing the bottom line—we’re focused on delivering the best possible results for our clients.”
He credits much of the firm’s success to doing the basics well: communicating clearly, following through, and keeping promises. Those habits, he says, build trust over time and distinguish the firm in a competitive industry.
Kevin also views community engagement as an extension of that philosophy. Staying active in local chambers, civic organizations, and community events reinforces the firm’s reputation as a partner who shows up and invests in relationships beyond business.
“It’s about showing up, being genuine, and earning our reputation not just through what we do, but how we do it.”
STAYING VISIBLE IN A CHANGING MARKET
In today’s digital world, maintaining visibility requires more than social media posts, it also demands responsiveness and authenticity. Kevin emphasizes that returning calls and emails promptly and engaging with clients in person still matter. Despite the convenience of digital communication, he believes nothing replaces real, personal interaction.
“You have to go back to the basics — build real, personal relationships and always be present.”
EMBRACING INNOVATION
While relationships are at the heart of Hussey Gay Bell’s approach, technology is becoming an increasingly valuable tool for progress. Kevin sees emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, as opportunities to help address workforce shortages and boost efficiency. For him, embracing new tools goes hand in hand with the firm’s client-first mindset.
“I see AI (artificial intelligence) playing a big role in helping with workforce shortages and improving efficiency. I’m excited about how technology can streamline operations and improve our ability to serve our clients more effectively. At Hussey Gay Bell, we’re embracing these trends while maintaining our focus on client relationships.”
LOOKING AHEAD
Kevin recognizes that one of the biggest challenges facing the water and wastewater industry in the coming years is the shortage of skilled professionals.
“As veteran professionals retire and the pipeline of incoming talent narrows, the industry faces a real risk of losing invaluable institutional knowledge.”
He believes solving that issue requires proactive investment in workforce development, structured training, and clear career pathways for young engineers and operators.
“Ensuring continuity of expertise is critical to maintaining safe, compliant, and efficient operations across the board.”
As the firm continues to grow across the Southeast, Kevin’s focus remains clear — investing in people, strengthening relationships, and continuing to build a legacy of trust and excellence.
