St. Simons Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade
The Design Build Team of Winter Construction and Hussey Gay Bell completed the treatment alternative evaluation, permitting, design and upgrade of the St. Simons, Georgia Wastewater Treatment Plant from 3 MGD to 4 MGD accomplishing startup of the upgrade within 24 months. Delays associated with permitting were minimized through close communication and frequent meetings with the Georgia EPD.
The upgrade included conversion of the existing treatment process from a Sequential Batch Reactor to Advanced Conventional Treatment. Upgrade to the treatment plant required the existing treatment train to remain in service during construction of the new process units. The treatment plant as designed provides reuse quality effluent for discharge into Dunbar Creek and for future transport for irrigation island-wide. The upgrade incorporated rebuilding the existing SBR basins for conversion to activated sludge basin with the addition of new clarifiers, effluent filters, ultra violet disinfection and SCADA control.
