An Innovative Decked Bulb Tee Superstructure over CSX Railroad
This project involves the replacement of the S-90 (Boundary Street) Bridge over CSX & NS Railroads in Newberry, South Carolina. The existing bridge is a structurally deficient four span structure which was built in 1925. The proposed replacement structure consists of a single span decked bulb tee superstructure founded on integral steel pile abutments. Because the replacement structure will be built on the existing S-90 alignment, S-90 (Boundary Street) will be closed during construction of the new bridge and traffic will be detoured. The new bridge requires that the existing finished grade elevation be raised several feet in order to meet the current railroad vertical clearance requirements, as well as utilize the innovative superstructure design that qualified this project for IBRD funding. The project included MSE Walls and is located in the Historical District of Newberry, South Carolina.
The project scope included project management, field surveys, geotechnical and subsurface investigations, geotechnical engineering, conceptual design of the bridge and roadway improvements, preparation of the required environmental and permitting documentation, railroad coordination, utilities coordination, development of preliminary and final bridge and roadway construction plans, as well as construction phase support.
