New Fire Station No. 2, Sandy Springs, GA

A new 22,000 SF fire station, 24/7, self-contained facility

In 2019, Hussey Gay Bell commenced design on the City’s new 2-story, 4-bay fire station to replace its original station opened up 50+ years ago on Johnson Ferry Road. Built in 1969, the original station had been through significant remodels over the years and no longer met programmatic needs for crew and apparatus nor for the growth of the Sandy Springs Fire Department (SSFD) who provides emergency and medical services to over 100,000 residents in a 38 square mile service area in the second largest city in the metropolitan Atlanta area.  The design of the new, 22,000 SF, 24/7, state-of-the-art 4-bay facility places emphasis on firefighter safety and health through design features including a 1,000 SF gym, a decontamination area with independent HVAC systems and an infrared sauna for detoxification. Other core programmatic features include living quarters with both men and women’s lavatories and private sleeping quarters, office space for staff, and a conference\community room.  Special features include an integral stair training tower, rappelling wall and tunnel rescue training, confined space simulator which will provide firefighters with critical in-house training completely on-site.

The new station will be constructed on the same property as the current fire station. As part of the new design, a six-foot wall will help separate the station from the nearby neighborhood, and the position of the building moved to allow a 25-foot buffer between the station and neighborhood.  Infrastructure improvements include parking, utilities, sewer and stormwater management. This $9.2 million project is slated to bid for construction in 2020 with completion planned for Spring of 2021.
