Recreation Gym at the Clarence E. Morgan Central Recreation Complex
In 2015, Effingham County commenced master planning efforts on a long-desired 120-acre recreation complex to be located on the west side of Highway 21 in Springfield, Georgia. Designed by CHA in collaboration with Hussey Gay Bell, Phase I scope consisted of five baseball fields, walking trails, parking, concessions, restrooms, a maintenance building, a handicap-accessible playground, a smaller playground, batting tunnels, covered and lighted bleachers, a picnic pavilion and associated infrastructure. Completed in 2017, the $8 million Phase I was constructed by Statesboro-based Lavender & Associates.
During the course of Phase I, the need for a new county gymnasium was identified and added as a separate project into the scope of Phase I development plans. The new $4.5 million, 27,800 SF recreation gym was constructed by Augusta-based R.W. Allen Construction which features two full basketball courts that can be separated by a removable folding wall to accommodate for 250 spectators, bleachers, public restrooms, concession with cooking, storage, changing rooms, and a small office suite. The facility will serve a dual purpose as a special events center and was completed in 2020.
Phase II is slated to include six baseball fields, four multi-purpose soccer/football fields, sports lighting, playground, parking lots, driveways and a campground.
