Growing Demand for Public Health Services “LEEDs” to New Facility

This new, state-of-the-art, health department on the corner of Eisenhower Drive and Sallie Mood Drive became occupied on May 7, 2013. The $8.5 million, 40,000 SF building houses a variety of public health programs including child health, family planning, the Women, Infant, and Children’s program, vital records, and a laboratory. In addition, the Environmental Health Division, previously located on Mall Boulevard, is located in the new health department building. Spaces include two general processing stations, exam rooms, waiting rooms, immunization, pharmacy and laboratory testing facilities.

The facility achieved LEED Gold Certification in April 2014 and features a variety of sustainable and innovative design features including “smart” technologies.

Chatham County’s existing Health Department was originally designed and constructed in the 1970s. In response to the growing demand for public health services, the County elected to fund the design and construction of a new, state-of-the-art sustainable facility adjacent to the existing facility.
