New Fiber Cement Plant No. 3
Hussey Gay Bell provided architectural design, engineering and construction phase services for CertainTeed Corporation’s new fiber cement plant located in the Vigo County Industrial Park in Terre Haute, Indiana. The facility was constructed on a 95-acre tract to include a 428,000 SF manufacturing facility, 9,120 SF office building, four level (85′ ht.) water building with three (3) internal vessels, a 1,200 SF dosing building, 3-acre concrete storage yard, truck scale, tarping stations for trucks and railroad loading, two (2) railroad spurs for raw material delivery and final product shipping, and a 148-space employee parking area.
In addition to working on the building itself, Hussey Gay Bell and its consultants were intimately involved with the layout and installation of the process equipment including production lines, paint lines, compressed air systems, autoclaves, boilers, etc. This work was based on metric technical drawings and data, primarily from European suppliers, provided to Hussey Gay Bell by CertainTeed.
Hussey Gay Bell structural engineers designed highly complex floor slabs, containment areas, railroad and truck loading areas, equipment foundations, equipment support and cranes, raised platforms for elevated pre-fab control rooms, and access/service platforms for equipment throughout the facility.
A significant portion of the process layout and equipment selection was not completed prior to construction start. Therefore, design and installation of Owner selected process systems and installation were provided by a design-build contractor under a separate contract.
