Ben Sawyer/Intracoastal Waterway Water Main, Sullivan’s Island, SC

Ben Sawyer/Intracoastal Waterway Water Main Crossing

Project consists of the installation of approximately 5,750 LF of transmission water main to provide a third connection to a MPW owned water main located at Toler’s Cove in Mt. Pleasant. The scope includes a connection to CWS’s existing 20-inch transmission water main along Middle Street on Sullivan’s Island with an open cut extension to a location on the northwest side of the island, where it will then cross the marsh and Intracoastal Waterway by horizontal directional drill with a connection made to an existing 12-inch water main in the vicinity of Toler’s Cove Drive at Marsh Harbor. One dual flow meter installation on Sullivan’s Island will also be provided. In Phase 1, Hussey Gay Bell performed a preliminary engineering evaluation and prepared a Preliminary Engineering Report (PER) in order to determine the pipe size and the alignment of the upland and horizontal directional drill routes. Upon the final determination on the selected route, Phase 2 consisted of the design and permitting for the 16-inch diameter water transmission main crossing. Scope includes approximately 5,200 LF of horizontal directionally drilled (HDD) water main (16” minimum I.D.), 550 LF of 16-inch ductile iron pipe for connecting the existing main at each end of the HDD, wholesale meter vault with SCADA system, and associated appurtenances.
