Our History Runs Deep

A Vision United

HUSSEY GAY BELL was founded and incorporated in the State of Georgia in April of 1958 by World War II veterans and native Savannahians, Roy Hussey, PE, and Ben Gay, PE.  Both civil engineers, the gentlemen shared a passion and vision for the future growth of their hometown and rapidly immersed into the planning and design of local infrastructure projects.  It was during these first years of sustained portfolio growth that Mr. Hussey and Mr. Gay identified an emerging talent and soon thereafter hired Gus H. Bell, III, PE – a young and dynamic civil engineer working with the US Army Corps of Engineers who remains with the firm more than 50+ years later.

Steadfast Progression

From those humble beginnings in a single room, one-telephone office in historic downtown Savannah, Georgia on Bay Street the firm has grown into a nationally-recognized, award-winning engineering, architecture, survey, program management and construction services firm catering to seven core markets – commercial and residential, education, government, healthcare, industrial, transportation and water – by offering a fully integrated range of engineering disciplines including civil, water/wastewater, transportation, natural gas, environmental and structural in addition to architecture, interiors, landscape architecture and surveying.

Celebrating 60+

Sixty-plus years after the founding of the firm, now CEO & Chairman, G. Holmes Bell, IV, PE, continues to build upon the firm’s reputation by embracing and enforcing its core founding principles of client service, high quality work, and family by championing transformation and growth from within, as well as expanding the firm’s operations to other cities and states to better serve clients in our respective markets.  Today the firm employs 150+ employees in eight office locations in three states throughout the region. Having refined the region through thoughtful designs for the past 60 years, we look forward to redefining the region for the next 60.
